I read this as if I were single again too, in need of wardrobe solace to start dating again!!! I'm kinda sad I'm not lol. Love you're enjoying dating so much and that it's going so well (you SO deserve it) but really with you every one of your outfits is a lucky one cause they're just so perfect.
I ate this piece up. Love reading about your life and then seeing it illustrated through style. Adore what you currently have in rotation. Thank you for sharing with us!
Thank you for sharing these outfits. As someone recalibrating their wardrobe postpartum (with a lot of help from this newsletter, including color analysis by Carol!), the 7 look concept makes the idea of a curated wardrobe that I love again feel within reach. I also have champagne taste on a beer budget, so sometimes get overwhelmed with the cost of high quality pieces. I’ve so appreciated your advice on how to add items to one’s wardrobe in a thoughtful manner. Just wanted to let you know how much this newsletter has meant to me in this season of life. 💓
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this comment; especially knowing you have a little one in tow and your time is precious, it means the world.
I'm so happy you're getting value from the newsletter. Carol is a genius isn't she? My session with her really has changed the game for me. It's brought me perfectly balanced guidance: I'm not obsessively checking my colors and rules but I somehow seem to have to developed an instinct for the colors that aren't for me. I avoid brights categorically now but it doesn't feel like a sacrifice or a compromise, it just comes naturally. I find it fascinating. What were your results?
Champagne taste with beer budget (best way to put it!) sounds like the perfect way to shop if you ask me... You won't be wasting your money and will focus on quality and on the things you crucially need and want. I hope you're finding the early-season styling of your seven outfits a good escape and that it is stimulating your creativity. The content I have coming up is going to be even more styling and wardrobe efficiency-focused so hopefully you'll keep picking up tips. (And hopefully the new shopping column will also help you unearth treasures in your budget!).
This is so timely - after having been a subscriber for nearly a year I was going to post my first ever comment to request if you could share a more recent 7 outfit season as I’m in the process of putting one together for this season of my life (in short 4 months postpartum with my carefully curated wardrobe now no longer fitting me and having no time to pull together the disparate pieces that actually do into a coherent look that feels like me). So great to see this breakdown, loved it. ps honey to the nervous system gave me ALL the vibes and is the perfect description (see also the Sam Cook song That’s Where It’s At) 💛
Ohhhhhh, that tune... Thanks for sharing. Sharing music is my love language, hehe.
I'm so glad this was timely for you. As I said in response to another comment from another lovely postpartum mum subscriber - I know your time is precious, so I really appreciate you taking the time to read AND leave a comment. I'm so happy that the framework is coming in handy as you navigate this season of life which I'm sure is equally beautiful as overwhelming!
Single 16 yrs by choice now dating at 52. It’s luck and a numbers game. Glad to hear about your life enjoyment at this stage. No jeans in this quarter?
10,000,000% luck and a numbers game. I was discussing this with friends just last night; at first I got into a slightly toxic pattern of texting with these men A LOT prior to meeting them. It was a terrible idea. It builds up expectations on both ends and every time one or both parties ended up disenchanted. Silver lining of this approach: When the person shows up - you know what to expect.
I decided to switch it up and changed my approach - no more extensive texting before meeting people. It feels healthier BUT it's a completeeeee toss up when it comes to what you're gonna get. Almost like a blind date. I went on three of those dates, one of them was magic, one of them was fine, one of them was a complete waste of time. NuMbErS gAmE!!!!!!
Definitely not easy!
As per jeans, hahaha - you're very astute. I'm not a jeans gal. I can't explain it. I have bought so so so so so so many pairs over the years and I just don't wear them. Once in a while a pair will tickle my fancy and tempt me but I have learnt my lesson so I never buy them anymore. I kind of wish I liked them!!!! I'm sure you already subscribe to her but if you don't Sarah James is awesomeeeeee and loves denim. I don't wear jeans but I still devoured this post last week haha: https://whoorl.substack.com/p/jeans-jeans-jeans
I’m so glad you’re having fun dating and I love all your outfits and your thoughts about them.
Dating for me HAS been a hellscape and it’s interesting to read the difference between dating in your thirties and your fifties. I find the men I meet to be jaded from failed marriages, emotionally stunted, and mostly in poor physical condition. Many have had traumatic childhoods and no therapy. Most are emotionally avoidant and will make your life hell if you dare to get close to them. And that’s if I can even get a date! Which is rare. Ugh. I am envious as it is not fun dating at my age and has brought out a lot of insecurities about my appearance and self-worth
I can't tell you how many times I have drafted and then deleted a sentence to acknowledge that I have many friends who are single who are S.T.R.U.G.G.L.I.N.G with it. It felt patronising so I decided to not say anything. I hope that reading what I wrote wasn't triggering and just know I can totally see how many women would have a different experience. They are not having a good experience, and I'm appalled to see how much content there is out there making women feel crap about being single. I hate when people give me the type of advice that's 'easier said than done' but I focus day in day out on making my life full and happy without a man. I'm not doing anything in my life to prepare or make space for a man. I'm focusing on making my life perfect for me and me only. If you aren't already on the Jillian Turecki train I CANNOT RECOMMEND IT ENOUGH. She also has a Substack if you'd rather read than listen. I did a deeeeeeeepppp dive into her archive after a very toxic encounter with the first guy post breakup and it turned my whole outlook on its head.
You're in my thoughts. Don't hesitate to reach out if you wanna chat! Xx
Hi Liza, thank you for the nice reply and I didn’t mean to make you feel guilty for having a great time dating. I was just having a down moment in my own journey. Sometimes I feel good about the whole thing and I’m enjoying going out more since I’m trying to meet someone IRL, but yeah at others the whole thing feels mixed up in the aging process and dealing with both aging and being unable to get dates easily can be some hard knocks.
I follow Jillian on instagram but I didn’t realize she had a Substack too. She has been great as well as some other coaches on social media and I have taken strides in my boundaries and saying no to men who aren’t respectful etc. which all feels like a win. I need to keep challenging my inner narrative so that I feel I’m succeeding if I keep my standards up even if it means being single, rather than finding a partner being the measure of success.
Anyway keep having a great time! I don’t begrudge you any happiness just couldn’t help complaining ♥️💗💜
Liza I LOVED this piece. Gah! I just devoured it, and will read it again (and again). I was also in a relationship for a decade and found your words on dating for the first time—and dressing as a newly single person—so relatable. Thanks for sharing with us ❤️
Hehe yes!! You know, it’s going real damn well. Ending my relationship was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but also the best thing I’ve ever done. Fortunately we were able to part on good terms ❤️ I was single for a year, traveled a ton, and just took the time to get to know myself again before coming back to NYC. I call it my year of Robyn 😎 Writing a memoir on it! The clothes I bought during that year are my favorites. Dated a bunch, learned some things, and now I’m dating a guy who I just feel absolutely myself with. Kinda like that feeling when you wear an outfit that just feels so you. Gah, I could chat about this for ages—i am so exited for you! Definitely write about it! Maybe it’s a series? And PS the outfits are fabulous!! That fringe jacket! Those pointy-toe boots! 🔥
I just re-read this and feel like I should be taking a page our of your book (literally!). I don't think I'm focusing on time for myself enough. I need to either do this and/or find someone who leaves me the space to explore myself (this warm honey guy does...). I want to come to NYC this Summer - if you're keen, we should grab a drink when I do. Also - where can I pre-order the memoir... Xxx

Robyn!!! We're in this together girl, hehe. How's it treating you? I hope the circumstances of your separation weren't too painful and that singledom is treating you well! I'm sure there are ups and downs! It's wild how much it makes you rethink your wardrobe if you let it doesn't it? It shouldn't be the case! I'm not changing for no man! I'm really tempted to share more of the juicy details because this was so fun to write. Not sure if it's appropriate for a fashion newsletter but it would definitely be entertaining, hehe.
You've got this. Let me know you're getting on Xxx
