Aquarius season has come and gone. It was cosy and rainy, in London anyway. In last month’s round-up, I said I hadn’t read a book I loved with a capital L for years. It looks like I have reverse-jinxed myself as I now have a new favourite novel. I dove through an Oscars-shaped podcast rabbit hole and consumed a lot of content about friendships and the ‘aloneness crisis’. I also came across great vintage, a few excellent red handbags, and I finally tried on the High Sport pants. I share it all in today’s newsletter.

This month, I have added a ‘secondhand finds’ section to the round-up. As always, I welcome your feedback in the comments.

Hope you all have a scintillating Sunday.
Love, L x

Thrifty Things 🧥🪡

  • I came into this vintage Armani jacket which is the best fitting and most flattering garment I have put on my back in a while. Vestiaire Collective - my current secondhand site go-to as I rarely find good things on TRR nowadays - is overflowing with cinched-in pinstriped jackets for the nineties enthusiasts (select ‘Armani Collezioni’). Most are under $100 which is right seeing as most are viscose or with a poly lining. Regrettably, as is often the case with pre-owned, the size range available is narrow. Pair with dark-wash straight-leg denim.

All vintage Armani via Vestiaire Collective. From left to right and top to bottom: 1. Corset-detail Wool and Viscose Jacket size US2 ($116), 2. Pinstriped Corset-Detail Jacket size US2 ($84), 3. Grey Pinstriped Jacket size US6 ($215), 4. Oversized-collar Floral Jacket size US6 ($118), 5., Belt-detail Grey Jacket size US2 ($89), 6. Brown Wool Jacket size US4 ($69), 7. Grey Wool Pinstriped Jacket, size US4 ($74), 8. Black Cinched-in Cotton Blazer size US 6 ($61).
  • Now is a great time to shop current or recent collection winter pieces on resale sites. Fewer people are looking for coats, boots, and knits as spring is on the horizon and those selling will be more lenient in negotiations as they want to get rid of their unwanted pieces. I suggest looking up your favourite brands and sending price offers. For a full list of secondhand shopping hacks check out this previous newsletter.

All pre-loved from Vestiaire Collective (brand new except for the boots, The Row turtleneck, and By Malene Birger coat). From left to right and top to bottom: 1. Off-the-shoulder dress, Tove $456 $1,130 (-60%), 2. Mohair turtleneck, Totême $257 $610 (-60%), 3. Fringed coat, By Malene Birger $435 $1,300 (-70%), 4. Velvet jacket, Dries Van Noten $433 $1,535 (-70%), 5. Navy turtleneck, The Row $695 $950 (-30%), 6. Leopard trench coat, Dries Van Noten $960 $2,195 (-60%), 7. Kitten heel boot, Jil Sander $675 $1,570 (-60%), 8. Leather puffer jacket, Khaite $1,053 $2,200 (-50%), 9. Cotton top, Tove $155 $316 (-50%), 10. Danielle jeans, Khaite $370 $480 (-25%), 11. Bodysuit, Tove $228 $767 (-70%), 12. Over-the-knee slouchy boots, The Row $489 $2,590 (-80%).

Great Podcast Episodes 🎧🎙️

  • Why Gen Z women are becoming sharply more liberal while more and more Gen Z men shift to the right and the societal impact of this political gender gap.

  • In case you fancy listening ahead of the Oscars on March 10th, this episode of The Big Picture goes over what the Academy’s voting process looks like (from 1:03:31) and this episode of Critics At Large explains the campaign that movies lead to court those voters. This episode includes super cool trivia - I had no idea the Oscars took place in a mall? If you pull back a curtain, you might find you’re actually standing in front of a Sephora!

  • The stats in this episode of Plain English ‘Why Americans Stopped Hanging Out’ raised the hair on the back of my neck. Introverts will appreciate the distinction they make between aloneness and loneliness. It was the most fascinating piece of ‘content’ I have consumed this month. On the other end of the spectrum, and equally interesting, Rhaina Cohen speaks to Ezra Klein about reimagining life if friendship was at its center.

  • Mischa Barton on Call Her Daddy is a millennial pop culture moment. More tea is spilled in this one-hour episode than in the many seasons of rewatch podcasts I have listened to. I’m in awe of Alex Cooper’s ability to create a safe space for these public figures to share secrets they’ve kept for 20+ years.

  • My girl crush of the month, Lindsay Peoples in conversation with (my girl crush of many months) Cleo Wade in an episode of the Goop podcast on leaving behind your people pleasing tendencies. Lindsay, is the youngest editor-in-chief in Condé Nast’s history, the current EIC of The Cut, and the co-founder of the Black in Fashion Council. The industry needs more people like her who don’t view and run Fashion like a members club.

Fashion Finds And Wishlisted Pieces 🛍️❤️

  • I finally tried on the High Sport pants and I’m afraid I won’t be contributing to the hype. It might just be that my expectations were sky-high. I have seen them described as a thick pair of leggings, very versatile and flattering because they smooth ‘things’ out. The material was not at all what I expected after reading the many reviews. They do feel exactly like leggings, the cotton-blend type we wore to school in the nineties not the type we wear to the gym today, no thicker than that just a lot less stretchy. There is no doubt they are incredibly versatile, but this is also true of any pair of black kick flare pants. The flattering and smoothing review I disagree with; they were not flattering on me and highlighted ‘things’ I don’t particularly want highlighted. TLDR, I completely stand behind pants like these being an ✨INCREDIBLE✨ addition to a wardrobe, and these are a good option but not worth anyone going into the red for. If you’re specifically after the ‘flattering’ and ‘smoothing’ effect, I suggest something cut from a much heavier material. I have had the Brooklyn kick flares from A.L.C. for a few years which are ten times heavier, think skiing tights but stretchier. They’re very old, I could only find a pair of tan-colored ones here (A.L.C $119, $395), but

    Totally Recommend
compiled a great list of alternatives (here and here).
